CONTEMPORARY MOROCCAN RUGS

Contemporary Mrirt rugs have their origin around the village of Mrirt in the highlands of the Middle Atlas Mountains. The Mrirt tribes are nomadic, roaming with their herds from pasture to pasture. Tribal rug making was, and continues to be, an integral part of their culture, with techniques used in production passed down from generation to generation, for time immemorial, and using the fine wool from their herds.

TRIBAL MOROCCAN RUGS

As highlanders, Mrirt rugs tend to be dense, to provide warmth in the colder months and made with a “pile and weave” technique and knotted with lined knots. Mrirt tribal rugs are usually decorated with fertility symbols, a reflection of how important the size of the herd as well as children are to the survival and prosperity of the tribe.

MRIRT RUGS

HAND WOVEN RUGS

The Mrirt tribes are about 200km to the west of the Beni Ourain tribes and they use similar weaving techniques, packing the wool on the vertical loom with a metal comb. which gives a fine and silky texture to the wool, which is simply divine on the foot.

VINTAGE RUGS

Beni Mrirt rugs are sometimes called noble rugs, and this is because they continue to seduce interior designers and connoisseurs alike. Historically, the Mrirt region has easily accessible mineral deposits which have been minded for millennia, and the town of Mrirt was a trading centre for both the mineral deposits and the rugs produced by the tribespeople. Like Boujad rugs, Mrirt rugs took its name from the place they were known to come from.

MOROCCAN INTERIOR DESIGN

Mrirt rugs were always considered noble rugs due to their superior quality and comfort, and when the French occupied the region they loved Moroccan Interior design and took some of these rugs home with them and developed their own contemporary interior design trends that are now associated with the Contemporary Mrirt Rug. Nowadays, the trend of Berber rugs is very much in vogue. Many designers and stylists use them for their projects. There is no indoor magazine that can be read without seeing a Moroccan rug.

WHY BUY BENISOUK

Here at Benisouk we have a real passion for sharing our cultural heritage through our tribal rugs. We are not just rug merchants, we’re part of a sprawling community of Berber tribes who find ways for these remote communities to earn some money to access the things they want and provide for their needs. When you buy a Benisouk rug, you don’t just buy a high quality rug made with the best wool and woven using ancient techniques, you are also becoming part of the Berber Community.

In Berber Culture there is a strong sense of hospitality, and they have a system called “guest rights”. When a Berber offers you food, drink, or a rug for the night, they are also agreeing to take care of you and your needs until you are ready to move on. In a climate where finding food, water and shelter can mean life or death, there is a special meaning given to hospitality. So, when a Berber craftswoman creates a rug for you, the symbols on it are a practicing of a form of guest rights whereby they truly wish the health and vitality to a full and prosperous life.
